About Mama Kisses, Papa Hugs

From the creator of the best-selling God Gave Us You comes a warm exploration of the ways parents show affection--and how it mirrors God's affection for his followers.

Parents are always looking out for the perfect bedtime book to create a sense of well-being before a night of rest. Mama Kisses, Papa Hugs explores a child's curiosity about how love is shown between parent and child, with the reassurance that Mama and Papa will always love their little one. And like Lisa Tawn Bergren's young protagonist asks his mother, this question is pressing on the minds of many children:

"Mama, how does God kiss us?"

Mama smiled. "He kisses us a hundred times a day; although if you don't pay attention, you might miss it."

"At night he kisses us with a shooting star. In the morning, he kisses us with sunlight, crawling across the fields and into our windows. On a hot summer afternoon, he kisses us with a gentle breeze. But most of all, he kisses us through our family. That's how God made us. That's why I give you Mama kisses."

Tender Picture Book from Multi-Million-Selling Author Lisa Tawn Bergren Reassures Children of Their Parents’—and God’s—Unconditional Love and Affection

Mama Kisses, Papa Hugs Makes the Perfect Bedtime Book!

In Mama Kisses, Papa Hugs (WaterBrook; on-sale 3/24/2020), USA Today bestselling author Lisa Tawn Bergren offers her sweet, lyrical prose that follows the heartwarming bedtime ritual of a multiracial family.

Ideal for readers aged 3 to 8, this tender story reassures children of their parents’ love while also helping them discover the evidence of God’s affection flowing in and around them every day—from the rising of the morning sun to a shooting star across the night sky.

Mama Kisses, Papa Hugs features exuberant illustrations from award-winning, Belgrade-based illustrator Aleksandar Zolotić.

As Mama tucks her darling little boy into bed with a goodnight kiss, he rolls his eyes, saying, “Mama, I’m too old for kisses.” “Oh, kiddo, you are never too old for kisses,” she tells him. Mama playfully explains how sloths, lions, polar bears, and even horses kiss their little ones—and how God shows his love for us each day. Then Papa hugs his sweet child goodnight, explaining the love we can see in the world around us and how it serves to show us God’s love.

“Mama, how does God kiss us?”

Mama smiled. “He kisses us hundreds of times a day. Although, if we don’t pay attention, we might miss ‘em. At night, he kisses us with a shooting star. In the morning, he kisses us with sunlight that crawls across the fields and streams into our windows.

On a hot summer afternoon, he kisses us with a gentle breeze. But most of all, he kisses us through our family. That’s how God made us to share love.”

Children can cuddle up and rest in the knowledge that they will never be too old for Mama kisses or too big for Papa hugs. Never ever ever.

Questions & Answers with Lisa Tawn Bergren

1)What was your inspiration for Mama Kisses, Papa Hugs?
I wrote it for our youngest, Jack, when he was about the age of the boy pictured in the book and feeling a bit “too grown up” for kisses and hugs…at least that’s what he said, even though he accepted both. The book manuscript sat in my files for years until I finally had the chance to present it to a publisher. It’s a delight to have the book releasing March 24, 2020, even though my son is now 17-years-old! Of course, we’re going to give him a big hug and smooch to celebrate. J

2)What is Mama Kisses, Papa Hugs about?
This is a book about how a child tells his mom how he’s too old for “mama kisses,” and his dad that he’s too old for “papa hugs.” Each of them goes through other examples of how mothers and fathers hug and kiss their children…and ultimately, how God hugs and kisses us, too.
It’s fun and light and a super-cozy read for families that emphasizes love.

3)If you were to let parents, teachers, and librarians know one thing about Mama Kisses, Papa Hugs, what would that one thing be?
Children need all the reinforcement they can get in regard to knowing they are loved and cared for, no matter how big they get—Mama Kisses, Papa Hugs can help on that front.

4)What is your biggest hope for Mama Kisses, Papa Hugs?
My hope is that families all over the world will go to bed with big smiles on their faces after reading it.
