About Double Blessing

New York Times bestselling author and pastor invites readers to pursue, recognize, and flip every blessing from God. He provides the tools necessary to inventory one's blessings and participate in double blessing - that moment when a blessing in your life is leveraged to doubly bless another.

Mark Batterson believes it's possible to experience more of God's blessing - but that might look different than you would initially expect. The first wave of blessing is that which God gives you: time, treasure, talent. The double blessing, the second movement in this relationship, is our giving back to God by giving to others. In a day where divine flourishing and godly stewardship has been reduced to a hashtag; #blessed, Batterson challenges readers to pursue true, God-glorifying blessing and experience an exponential impact by participating in the double blessing.

Press Release

New York Times Best-selling Author Mark Batterson Encourages Readers to Make Gratitude and Generosity Their Lifestyle

Utilizing compelling faith stories from historical figures and his two decades of innovative ministry as lead pastor of National Community Church in D.C., Batterson provides clear and accessible biblical teaching on receiving and passing on God’s blessings.

Over three million people have benefited from Pastor Mark Batterson’s inspiring and very practical how-to-apply scriptural-truth-to-my-life books and now he offers his readers Double Blessing: How to Receive It. How to Give It. (Multnomah, 10/15/19), available a few weeks before America celebrates Thanksgiving.

Batterson utilizes his signature compelling storytelling and insightful biblical teaching to inspire and encourage believers in both gratefully receiving and giving God’s blessings through both words and actions. He adeptly addresses foundational topics of the Christian faith including:
-the rich spiritual blessings each believer receives in Christ as their inheritance
-the significance and benefits of taking regular inventory of one’s blessings and offering them as continual gratitude to God as a lifestyle
-the importance of passing on blessings through life-giving words, even to those who may have caused pain
-making practical God-honoring goals for tithing and generous giving, which helps keep greed in check
-walking under the “umbrella” of God’s blessings by being in complete obedience to God’s Word.

Known for leading the innovative National Community Church in D.C. for the last 20 years, Batterson also writes about some of the challenges and brokenness he has encountered. Highlighting the story of Joseph in Scripture, he reminds readers to look for blessings even in the broken places of their lives. “It takes a good eye to spot blessings in disguise,” he says.

Far from prescribing anything formulaic about blessings, Batterson points to biblical figures like Jacob who had to wrestle for the blessing and persevere through the ups and downs of life. He also warns against ways that each person can compromise their blessings. Along these lines, he strives to live by the motto, “Whatever you don’t turn into praise turns into pride.”

Additionally, he challenges his readers to embrace radical generosity with their time, talents and treasures. Throughout the book, he points people to God’s faithful character, reminding readers that giving generously is a sign that they trust a God who they can’t out give.

In a day where divine flourishing and godly stewardship has been reduced to a hashtag; #blessed, Batterson challenges readers to pursue true, God-glorifying blessing and experience an exponential impact by participating in the double blessing.

“God doesn’t bless us to raise our standard of living. God blesses us to raise our standard of giving.” –Mark Batterson in Double Blessing

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Mark Batterson is the author of 17 books including the ECPA Christian Book award-winning Whisper, the USA Today bestseller Chase the Lion and The New York Times best-seller The Circle Maker. He’s the founder and lead pastor of National Community Church (NCC), one church with seven campuses throughout Washington D.C. NCC, known as one of the most innovative and influential churches in America, also owns and operates Ebenezers Coffeehouse, the Miracle Theatre, and the DC Dream Center.

Since 2001, NCC (comprised largely of single twenty-somethings) has invested more than $19.3 million in kingdom causes. They’ve also taken 228 mission trips around the world. NCC resettles 65% of refugees in DC area—helping them furnish apartments, find employment, and acclimate to America. In 2018, they served 6,000 meals to their friends experiencing homelessness, helping some of them find a place to live. And National Community Church’s DC Dream Center offers programs including one-on-one mentorship, tutoring and reconciliation lunches, which facilitate an environment where urban and suburban, rich and poor, young and old, as well as all races and ethnicities can come together to establish friendships.

Five years ago, NCC purchased the Navy Yard Car Barn, the last building standing in the city that relates to the cable car era. In 2018, NCC began renovating and restoring this 1891 block-long building to transform it into a ministry hub to be a blessing to the city. The three phases of this project are:
1) 1,000 seat event venue (opening Summer 2019) allowing NCC to have a 24/7 ministry and outreach space while also generating income to impact more people
2) child development center to meet D.C.’s desperate need in the area of providing trustworthy and accessible care of children between 6 weeks-5 years old (Jan. 2020 targeted opening)
3) the mixed-use marketplace, which will serve as an incubator for entrepreneurs and creatives and a community hub where people can work, eat, and play.

Batterson has been interviewed on many media outlets including The Washington Post, “The Glenn Beck Program,” Christianity Today, Religion News Service, The Startup Camp Podcast, Forbes.com, “The 700 Club” and the “NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.” Batterson has a doctor of ministry degree from Regent University and lives in the Capitol Hill area with his wife and their three children.
