Widely respected speaker and best-selling author Erwin Raphael McManus didn’t realize when he wrote The Last Arrow: Save Nothing for the Next Life (WaterBrook, September 5, 2017)
that he may be close to the end of his own life. But when McManus was diagnosed with cancer just before making his final edits on the manuscript, his words to others burned even deeper in his soul.
“Before you hear it from someone else, I need to tell you that I’m dying,” McManus wrote in The Last Arrow –
a year before his diagnosis. At the time, he was telling his readers that he wanted to live as the best version of the person God created him to be because his days on earth were few. Before the book went to press, though, the words took on greater power. Suddenly his desire to finish well, without fear or regret, became even more important to communicate.
McManus writes that the value of a person’s life is not based on wins and losses or successes and failures. At the end of life, what matters most is not having anything left in your quiver because you have given everything you’ve got. Leaving it all on the battlefield feels risky, but it gives the greatest sense of fulfillment. As McManus told his congregation days before he went into surgery, “I made a decision that while cancer may define how I die, it will not define how I live.… There is more courage in us than danger ahead of us.” The Last Arrow
is a bold manifesto for a life of passion, adventure, and hope. As McManus tells through his words and his own life story, everyone is living out their last days – and no one needs to settle for less than all life has to offer.ABOUT THE AUTHOR Erwin Raphael McManus
