Living a Joyful Life

“Live a life that truly thrives, one that constantly capitalizes on God-given joy.

Let me urge you again to strive for this joy—not just for your own sake but also for others in your life, such as your spouse, friends, colleagues, and especially your children. It’s the only life you’ll ever have. And no one can live it for you. It matters not if you have a thousand excuses for why your life isn’t joyful. At the end of the day, it’s far better to have a good life than a good excuse!”

A Seasonal Perspective

The author of Ecclesiastes looked around him at situations where justice and righteousness should be evident, only to observe that “wickedness was there” and “iniquity was there” (verse 16). Maybe he was thinking about courtrooms, government halls, and the marketplace, or maybe he thought primarily of the human heart. Or all the above. Evil was everywhere.

But he did not despair over this; he went on: “I said in my heart, ‘God shall judge the righteous and the wicked, for there is a timefor every purpose and for every work’ ” (verse 17). Even when injustice and corruption appear unhindered in their pollution, a seasonal perspective enables us to hold on to God’s hope. He will, in His perfect timing, make things right—preparing the way for the triumph of every good purpose and every good work.

The believer in Christ knows something here that Old Testament saints could glimpse only faintly: the ultimate good purposes and good works mentioned here will find their glorious fulfillment in Jesus and His gospel.

Knowing Where You’re Going

If you don’t know where your life is going, any route will get you there. One job that pays the bills will appear as good as another (even better, if the remuneration is higher). One spouse or church or house or career will seem as acceptable as another if you have no sense of where your life is headed and what help you need to arrive at your destination. But when your life is guided by a sense of purpose and direction, you recognize how profoundly every decision you make either draws you closer to or moves you away from where your life is meant to be.

When the Old Testament prophet Jeremiah was still a teenager, God assured him, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5). David affirms in Psalm 139 that even before we were born, God had a purpose for our lives (verse 16).

In the brief period in which we inhabit the globe, it’s our sacred obligation to determine why our Creator granted us the gift of life and placed us on the planet at this specific time and place.
