Philippians Study Invites Readers to Share in the  Apostle Paul’s Unshakeable Joy

We want joy, we hope for peace, and we long for contentment. But where do we find deep, lasting joy in the midst of our often difficult circumstances? In All Things: A Nine-Week Devotional Bible Study on Unshakeable Joy (Multnomah, 6/5/2018) by Melissa B. Kruger explores the book of Philippians to reveal Paul’s secret to a no-matter-what joy.

Kruger—editor for The Gospel Coalition, speaker and women’s ministry coordinator—uses her gift of writing paired with her deep knowledge of scripture to guide readers through Paul’s letter to the Philippians. In addition to including her personal anecdotes and insight, Kruger invites readers each week to observe and interpret selected scriptures and then apply what they have learned to make the connection between God’s Word and their own lives.

Kruger begins the study with Paul’s arrival on the biblical stage in the books of Acts as he goes from persecutor to preacher to persecuted. She demonstrates how he first found joy in his salvation, and that his joy then began to increase as he experienced true fellowship, understood Christ’s lordship over his suffering, partook in Christ’s humility and obeyed God’s Word. Paul’s future hope in heaven also gave him present joy in his circumstances, and prayer and petition along with thanksgiving gave him an unshakeable joy when he was surrounded by external struggles and hardships.

Kruger unpacks each of these experiences and understandings as the weeks of the study progress, ultimately demonstrating that our joy comes from Jesus himself—not from what the world promises will satisfy us.

“You and I both need something much greater than we can muster up on our own,” Kruger writes. “We need something outside ourselves, something stronger, something secure. This thing we’re searching for, this thing we’re hoping to find? Well, it’s not really a thing. It’s a person. Spoiler alert: it’s Jesus.”
