About The Pressure's Off

You can stop trying to get everything right.

Is the pressure getting to you? Do you try to make everything work, only to find that your best efforts are largely ineffective?

Christians have unknowingly embraced two errors: that following the rules guarantees a good life, and that God is important because He dispenses blessings. When God’s blessings seem to taper off and when life doesn’t work out, people take it upon themselves to make things work. And that creates pressure that we are all too familiar with.

In The Pressure’s Off, best-selling author and counselor Larry Crabb introduces you to the New Way of living. God does not guarantee ease or convenience—or even a good outcome as the result of your obedience. But he does promise himself, no matter what the circumstances of your life.

When you seek God and nothing else, the pressure truly is off you.

Praise for The Pressure's Off

“If, like me, you see blessing-centeredness rather than God-centeredness as a great weakness of American evangelicalism, you will hail this exploration of the freedom and joy of grace as timely therapy, a word in season that we all needed. May it be widely read and thoroughly digested.”
—J. I. PACKER, theologian and author of Knowing God

“The evangelical church, choking under a pervasive legalism/moralism that suffocates the human spirit, finds a powerful voice for freedom in Larry Crabb. Writing from the inside out, he presents a vibrant way of living with
passion and without pressure.”
—BRENNANMANNING, author of Ruthless Trust

“C. S. Lewis wrote about prosperity knitting us to this world, and while we are seeking our place in the world, the world is actually finding its place in us. Dr. Larry Crabb has constructed a compelling narrative that shows how we have imprisoned ourselves by using the world’s ways to ‘get something from God,’ instead of appropriating God’s way to receive something from Him.”
—CAL THOMAS, syndicated columnist and author

“Dr. Crabb not only gives us a clear mandate to celebrate Christian freedom, he also is our accompanist and exemplar on the Way of Freedom. You know he has walked that way with you. A remarkably personal message.”
—JAMES M. HOUSTON, Chancellor Emeritus and professor of Spiritual Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, B.C.

“This book makes a very important statement about how to live the Christian life. It takes the Christian beyond the obstacles and disappointments and, above all, beyond the age-old enemy of self straight into the arms of grace. Once there, the pressure is off. A real worthwhile read.”
—FRANK RETIEF, Presiding Bishop, Church of England in South Africa

“At last we have a book that confronts contemporary Christian culture with its increasing tendency to be taken up with blessings more than the Blesser. I doubt whether anything Larry has ever written, or may write in the future, will contribute more powerfully to the needs of modern-day Christians than The Pressure’s Off.”
—SELWYN HUGHES, director of the Center for World Revival and author of Every Day with Jesus devotional

The question we often face as believers in Christ is whether we should be perfect or not. Scripture tells us that we are to live perfect lives, yet our sinful nature proves to us that we cannot... or can we? Larry Crabb's book "The Pressure's Off" takes a fresh look at the challenge to put pressure on ourselves to live as though it depends on us, when really our lives ought to be built on the love and grace that comes through a...

The Good This is a book you CAN judge by it's cover. What is more freeing than being a boy jumping in a lake in the middle of summer? The Pressure's Off. How can a book endorsed by J.I. Packer, Brennan Manning and Cal Thomas, be anything but good? You can read other reviews about the content. I'll just say... The content is great, the book well-written. The eight-week workbook in the back makes this a terrific counseling/discipleship...

First, I am a fan of Larry Crabb and his writing. The Pressure's Off is no different and hits on one of my favorite subjects- freedom in Christ. Growing up in a small, rural church, I can relate to the thoughts presented in the book- follow rules and you are blessed. It wasn't until recently I discovered the flaws in that logic. Crabb's message- we live a certain way to get certain things is true in every aspect of our life from family to...

Dr. Larry Crabb's book, The Pressure's Off (Breaking Free from Rules and Performance) was first published in 2002. I wonder how I would have received it if I had read it back then. I might have resisted or argued with the book's premise--that The New Way, the way of Jesus, has abolished "the moral Law of Linearity" (that is, that doing the right things and avoiding the wrong things is the way to blessing and satisfaction in life). But that...
