About Beauty Begins

You are, and always have been, beautiful.

“Beauty begins. That’s the point of this book. Our understanding of beauty got started somewhere and somehow, and probably due to someone. Now that may have been a good start, but then again it may not have. But regardless of what your past looks like, we want to offer up this word of hope: it’s never too late to make peace with your reflection.”

We live in a culture that’s obsessed with beauty. Walk by any magazine stand, turn on a television, or visit the local shopping mall, and you’ll be bombarded with the images and ideals that our culture believes are the epitome of what it means to be beautiful. And if you’re like most women, you’ve probably spent countless hours trying to measure up to this standard of beauty whether you realize it or not.

But if you don’t make peace with your reflection, you’ll end up declaring war on yourself.

That’s where mother-daughter team, Chris Shook and Megan Shook Alpha, want to help. In Beauty Begins, they explore the origins of beauty (which doesn't start with a fashion magazine) and challenge each of us to trade the pressure of perfection for God's perfect love.

Poignant, relevant, and relatable, Beauty Begins is for every woman who wants to reclaim what it means to be truly beautiful.

Do you feel beautiful?

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Others may tell you that you’re beautiful, but do you believe them? Why not? Don’t let another day go by without believing and knowing that you are fearfully and wonderfully made.

It’s time for you to exchange society’s cookie-cutter suggestions for what is beautiful and instead discover and reclaim what true beauty looks like – and the One who created it.

In Beauty Begins, Chris Shook and Megan Shook Alpha share with you their own experiences and struggles with appearance and body image, as well as equip you with the wisdom to distinguish what’s artificial beauty and what’s real. After reading the heartfelt encouragement, insightful challenges, and undeniable truth in Beauty Begins, you’ll never look in the mirror the same way again.

Keys to Timeless Beauty
Mother/daughter duo encourages women of all ages to trade the pressure of perfection for God’s perfect love in ‘Beauty Begins’

In an age of superficial beauty and supermodel icons, Chris and Megan offer a Christ-centered alternative that begins with the heart of God. Here’s a wise and wonderful guide to where true beauty begins.” –Lee and Leslie Strobel

From “true beauty” ad campaigns to public outrage about doctored images of already thin supermodels, society understands the pressure women feel to be beautiful. But in an ever-changing world, how does one define beauty? Where does beauty begin?

Mother and daughter team Chris Shook and Megan Shook Alpha address the daily struggles that all women face when it comes to feeling beautiful in their forthcoming book Beauty Begins: Making Peace with Your Reflection (WaterBrook Press, March 15, 2016).

“In our society it is impossible not to feel inadequate at times,” write the Shooks. “It’s hard to make it through even one day without feeling insecure about ourselves! We don’t have it all figured out, but we have discovered some practical ways to love the person God made us to be.”

As the director of Women’s Ministry and pastor to students at The Woodlands Church, Shook and Alpha surveyed hundreds of young women involved in the church asking them whether or not they would change something about themselves. An overwhelming 70 percent answered yes, and only 11 percent said “I’m completely content and at peace with my reflection.”

In Beauty Begins, Shook and Alpha encourage women of all ages—daughters, mothers, grandmothers—to learn to achieve a healthy mindset about their bodies and their immeasurable worth. Writing from their personal experiences, they insist that it’s never too late to begin conversations about what beauty truly means.

“When we begin to believe the truth of who we really are and who God made us to be, we’ll be set free to feel beautiful. Our goal in writing Beauty Begins is to encourage all of us to stop believing the lies and to start living the truth.”

And you would miss out on the whole reason you were created - to be in a relationship with your Creator.""My brokenness leads me to the Beautiful One and the true source of my beauty. Beauty begins in brokenness, because beauty begins when I come to the end of myself and totally surrender to...

I really enjoyed reading Beauty Begins. It is about true beauty and positive self-image. This is such a necessary topic in our society where everyone is pushed to compare themselves to others. It is written by a mother-daughter duo as well. The book is divided into three main sections. The first section, The Beautiful Truth, focuses on where beauty comes from... God. The second section, The Beautiful Struggle, focuses on the daily struggles we...

I loved this book so much! it taught me how to see the beauty within my self and others instead of always looking on the outside.  True beauty truly does come from within. I loved how this mother and daughter duo were not afraid to show their love of Christ through this book.

Beauty Begins was a lovely reminder that our worth as human beings is found in Christ alone. The book provided scripturally-based evidence that the mirror cannot tell us anything about our true value. While simplistic at times, Beauty Begins was a thoughtful, worthwhile read.

I loved that Beauty Begins spoke to the emotions I've struggled with since childhood.  But I also loved that Chris and Megan take the time to examine beauty through God's eyes and why beauty matters, though not in the way we think.  The mother and daughter duo examine many different ways in which we were made beautiful and how we can feel beautiful, and it involves so much more depth than you'd imagine.  I'd love to share with you the ins and...
