The Orphan King by Sigmund Brouwer, Book One- Merlin's Immortals

The Orphan King, a book for teens, is the story of Thomas, an orphan, who sets off on a secret mission to conquer Magnus. He has been raised by monks in a country monastery since his mother died and now he is grown up and ready to embrace his future. His mother raised him with secret knowledge of how to overtake Magnus and he has learned from some books which they kept stashed in a secret location. He frees a knight who has been sentenced to hang and along with him rescues a boy and a mute/deaf young lady. He has been warned not to trust anyone and is reluctant to tell any of his new friends anything but what they need to know to accomplish their mission.

We don't learn who is loyal to him and his cause and who his enemies are until the end of the book. Thomas uses his intellect more than his strength to overtake Magnus and to solve problems as the group journeys along the way. He has left God but is encouraged to re embrace his faith by a mysterious young lady he meets in the town of Magnus.

Here is a podcast for The Orphan King.

This book was interesting. I enjoyed the setting of medieval England in The Orphan King. It was interesting to see how Thomas solved problems and got out of tight situations by using his wit and the years of study he did while preparing for his adventure. The book is full of adventure and will keep the young reader turning pages to see what happens next.

More info about the book

There is a light love interest in the book but it doesn't lead to anything inappropriate which is nice. Thomas keeps himself guarded from being pulled in by the young lady and revealing what he shouldn't about his mission. The other characters add some fun and wisdom to the story. The boy, John, reminds me of my own boy with all his energy, spouting off at the mouth, and generally keeping everyone entertained during their journey. The knight acts almost like a father figure to Thomas further preparing him for his mission by teaching him to think through each situation before acting.

I will be passing The Orphan King along to my young teen to see what he thinks. I think he will enjoy the story.
