The Pleasures Of God: Meditations on God's Delight in Being God (Revised Edition)

by John Piper, Published by Waterbrook Multnomah

As mere men, we often live in discontent or frustration. We are disappointed with ourselves, our weaknesses and our failures. Oh, how different it would be if we were God Himself. What must life be like for One of such supreme glory, such amazing wisdom, such invincible power, incredible purity, and perfect love, unequalled in any of His virtues?

Think along with John Piper as he explores the delight that God has in just being God. As we discover all the wonders of why God has such pleasure in Himself, we will be moved to join Him in a level of worship that is unimaginable to the person who has not considered His glory on such a plane. Piper has a unique capacity for joining together the intellectual stretching of a scholar with the awe and wonder of a child. Your heart will be transformed as you behold these glimpses of glory.

Until we gain at least some understanding of the pleasure that God has in being Himself, we will find the Christian life to be more burdensome than blessed. Yet, we are moved along with the realization that all creation is an expression of God’s personality, and we were uniquely created for the praise of His glory. As we find our joy in Him alone, we will be released from trivial concerns, but also empowered for the grand exploits of His mission among us. He delights in us precisely because of His delight in Himself. We were created to be His image bearers. As that purpose is accomplished, as He forms His holy character within us, then He can look upon His handiwork with deep satisfaction. As we experience this fresh dimension of His love for us, we cannot help but love Him more.

This wonderful little book does more than give a new focus. It is a new perspective. As we discover more of who He is, we begin to see all of life through His eyes instead of our own. Oh, those frustrations and disappointments? They also begin to fade as we realize that every part of life is His creative handiwork. We may not have all the answers, but we certainly do know the One Who does.
