This is a review of “To Heaven and Back: A Doctor's Extraordinary Account of Her Death, Heaven, Angels, and Life Again: A True Story by Mary C. Neal”. This a very encouraging story on faith, healing and trusting in God. Very easy to read and understand and quite an amazing story of perseverance through a lot of hard situations in her life. I am a very strong believer in the power of God and his power to heal, it is encouraging to hear testimonies of how He has touched a person’s life and I feel Mary has done a good job of relaying her story. I have always been skeptical of near death experiences and the wide variance in descriptions of supposedly the same place, heaven, but on the same note I have learned not to put God in a box. So if this experience is true “Amazing” if not, it’s still a decent story. Regardless of your belief in near death experiences I think the book has a lot to offer on faith and listening to God. As a pastor I do wish she had focused more on what this means in our relationship with Christ and salvation. God is mentioned extensively, but there is little if any mention of Christ. Some of the theology portrayed is contrary to mainstream Christianity and might be confusing or misleading to some so keep that in mind as you read. Otherwise enjoy the story, and if nothing else it makes you think about what you truly believe, and that is never a bad thing.
