I approached this book with some hesitancy, knowing that books such as these, “get off your butt and do something books”, often come with some great advice but very little scripture to back it up. I thought this book had a very good mix of practical insight and wisdom and gleaning from scriptures. I wish there were more scripture references however, knowing that the word of God apart from good advice doesn’t produce any real heart change.

Having said that, I do not recommend this book to those who are looking for scripture packed, checklist ways in which God calls men. This book will lead you many places with many stories which are good and well told, yet the scripture is not packed into every page, which may leave readers with a feeling of arriving at the end with no recollection of how we got there. This book is a very easy and understandable book to read and I do recommend it to those who want to get their feet wet of where we should be heading as men seeking to learn from the Lord. The stories are interesting and personal, which leads me to believe Troy Meeder knows what he is talking about and likes to relay that information in a story-telling kind of way. Some of the points of the stories were lost on me but as a whole work this book was helpful in bringing me back to the basics of my call as a father to my family and a mentor to those around me.

Overall i would rate this book well and recommend it to those who want a foothold in which to start diving into the subject of men and what God wants from them.

My Underlines:

The grass grows. So does the believer. Life has a tendency to beat us up a bit, just like the grass. Every day people come by and walk on the grass; they spill Cokes and food; they mash the grass down. In our life, Satan, that their and liar, is the worst. He shows up with his worn-out lies and tricks, just like a mower with dull, worn out blades, and chops us off. (page 29)

We agree with those who counsel us to cultivate good, deep, abiding friendships with those around us. We nod our heads and beat our chests in agreement, yet few of us ever take a life-changing challenge of making the first things….first. (page 67)

Satan and his minions will work tirelessly to make sure you don’t stop running around your pen long enough to stand quietly at the side of your Creator. Kick the ugly bum in the teeth and seek Jesus in the morning. (page 135)
