Book Description:

A young architect at a prestigious Chicago firm, Bethany Quinn has built a life far removed from her trailer park teen years. Until an interruption from her estranged mother reveals that tragedy has struck in her hometown and a reluctant Bethany is called back to rural Iowa. Determined to pay her respects while avoiding any emotional entanglements, she vows not to stay long. But the unexpected inheritance of farmland and a startling turn of events in Chicago forces Bethany to come up with a new plan.

Handsome farmhand Evan Price has taken care of the Quinn farm for years. So when Bethany is left the land, he must fight her decisions to realize his dreams. But even as he disagrees with Bethany’s vision, Evan feels drawn to her and the pain she keeps so carefully locked away.

For Bethany, making peace with her past and the God of her childhood doesn’t seem like the path to freedom. Is letting go the only way to new life, love and a peace she’s not even sure exists?

My Thoughts:

Katie Ganshert is a brand new author for me and I really enjoyed reading her work! I spent some time poking around her website and loved what I saw. She has posted quite a bit of great background information and other details surrounding this book which was fun to follow up on after reading this amazing story.

I especially loved the characters in this book. I was drawn in by their real emotions and deep feelings and practical faith. From the very first page, this story shares a difficult time in their lives and as the reader, you are immersed in what it would be like to be a part of the story.

Peaks, the town in the book, holds so much pain for Bethany. Yet, as she returns as an adult, she learns to see her childhood through new eyes. God redeems her story and allows her to see Him for herself and not just through the fallen lives of people around her. I love how Evan is used in this story to patiently help her view God in a new way.

This book holds an incredible message for today's generation. So many have walked away from God because of circumstances or people in their lives that they perceived to be "like God". When those people fail, it skews their view of God. This message is one that will help adults give themselves the chance to see God for who He is and not for what people told them He is. Healing comes in looking back and refocusing our past through new eyes.

I'm really looking forward to reading more about these characters as Katie Ganshert gives us another book in 2013!
